Gourdon

Gourdon: medieval town

Gourdon is the capital of the Bouriane area and is located 8 km from the campsite. This small medieval town is 3rd in the Lot, after Cahors and Figeac

HIGHEST POINT IN THE AREA

A small town from the middle ages, Gourdon tops a 300m hill. The town layout is inspired by its origin, built around an ancient castle destroyed by the English in the XVII century. At the center on top of the hill you’ll find St Peter’s church, built in the XIV century. Make your way up there and admire the breathtaking view of the surrounding countryside. You’ll find an orientation table, use it to spot Sarlat-la-Canéda, for example.

MEDIEVAL FESTIVALS

Take a nice stroll through the narrow streets, you’ll see beautiful buildings, tudor houses and many thematic gardens.

Early august, the medieval festival keeps Gourdon lively day and night. It’s a great place for kids! They’ll enjoy the street performances, they’ll get to play in the “games village” and witness the many artisans showcasing their crafts. It’s very close to the campsite, so don’t miss it !

PLAN OF WATER

Do you know why the body of water at the edge of Gourdon is called: Ecoute-S’il-Pleut (Listen if it rains)? Why not have the kids investigate during the visit?…And let us know what you found out.

FISHING, SWIMMING AND BIKING

Gourdon has two bodies of water, one is dedicated to fishing, “l’étang de Laumel”, the other to bathing, “l’Ecoute-s’il-pleut”. Bring the kids for the day, or make it the starting or ending point to a nice hike. There is a hiking trail to explore the surroundings. You can also bike around and take the “Voie Verte”(Green Trail) all the way to Sarlat-la-Canéda. 35 km of the old train tracks linking Gourdon, Sarlat and Souillac were repurposed as biking trails.
